Colony Co-Working – Down Arrow

8 March 2021

For International Woman's Day we are spending a week celebrating some of the amazing women who make our community so great! We will be uploading profiles daily where they have shared their experiences as women in their fields of work and more. Colony Manager Becca caught up with Kate Santo for our next profile.

International Women’s Day – Kate Santo

Continuing our celebration of women at Colony, we caught up with Kate Santo. What we loved about talking to Kate was hearing about her experience as a black woman and how this prepared her for a career in the male dominated tech industry.

Although on the 8th March International Women’s Day has been celebrated since 1910, often through protests and political activism, there was a longstanding pattern of racial exclusion. In recent years this balance has been re-addressed and it is recognised that women of all backgrounds should join together to fight for equality.

From technical content to podcasting - Kate is a multi-talented woman with ambition. Read her profile below to find out more about her:

A little about Kate

I’m Kate, a technical Content Designer at Padoq, a mobile app company. Working on technical content and general content tasks is what I now do day to day. In a previous life, I did content marketing and content localisation.

As my first language is Spanish, and I love creating content, when I am not working I also make a podcast with my sister and friend. There is definitely a content trend in everything I do!

What does it meant to be a woman in your field?

In content and in marketing, it’s quite frequent to have more female colleagues than male. Things are different in tech but, for me, that’s a motivation to do better. As a black woman, I’ve grown up having to prove myself in almost every aspect of my life. So I take on the challenge quite naturally. However, I look forward to a time when it's not a challenge to be a woman in tech. Also, at Padoq, there are lots of fantastic women doing tech and it is great to be part of a company where that is the case – it is very positive and encouraging.

If you had the knowledge you have now, what would you say to your younger self?

Don’t work so hard to please everyone else. Work hard to please yourself. It’s much more rewarding and it will take you further in whatever path you choose to follow (or create).

We will be publishing more profiles everyday this week to celebrate IWD and our amazing female members. Make sure you check out our website and social media each day to read their incredible stories!
