11 March 2021

For International Woman's Day we are spending a week celebrating some of the amazing women who make our community so great! We will be uploading profiles daily where they have shared their experiences as women in their fields of work and more. We spoke with Colony resident photographer - Sara Carpentieri for our next profile.

International Women’s Day – Sara Carpentieri

International Women's Day provides a perfect opportunity to combine important messaging and awareness raising with creativity. We love seeing how companies and individuals use this important time to tell stories in unique ways. It also provides us with a great chance to celebrate women in the artistic field. Sara’s work shines bright with creativity. Be sure to check out her Instagram page sara_carpentieri_ for examples of her amazing work!

A little about Sara

My name is Sara Carpentieri and I'm a photographer, director, content creator and most recently model scout.

I've worked with a real variety of clients and started my career working closely with musicians and artists and focusing on building an identity for them through imagery and video content.

In my personal work I focus a lot on subject and absolutely love working closely with colour and light, I really believe in editing an image by 'setting up' all the settings even before the image is taken. If you have beautiful natural light and vivid colours and textures already available to you, you should use it as much as you can.

I love film photography for that reason, you become very considered with each image, knowing you have limited images available and getting as much out of them as you can.

What does it meant to be a woman in your field?

I think to be a woman in my creative field means to believe in your own ability and know that what you're doing is creating a space for yourself in the industry. It is important for all female identifying individuals that we create a network of other female creatives so we can come together and build each other up.

It's vital to not be afraid to keep learning and admit you don't know everything but still feel confident, skilled and as talented, if not more than the mostly male professionals that have come before you.

If you had the knowledge you have now, what would you say to your younger self?

If I had the knowledge I have now I would say to my younger self that you just need to trust in where you're going and realise that not everything is a straight path and to keep pushing myself creatively.

Often because I don't see myself as a very technical person, I feel like others in my field may be more 'professional' than me but you have to realise that you have your own very individual unique skills that can't be learnt and that's what will give you your edge.

What I think is important is to find a balance between your commercial, paying work and carrying on your own side projects and creative work.
What I've learnt is to appreciate those days where you get to see all the ins and outs of project you've created and follow it through from start to finish, knowing you've been a part of it all and finally see the results.

I've also just started working on e-commerce content this year, which is something I never thought I'd get into, but it feels like now especially with the situation now, there's such a high demand for online content and more and more people are spending more online.

It's interesting to be part of an industry that's forever changing and realising that being interdisciplinary is becoming more and more in demand as roles that haven't even been invented yet will often just pop up without you even realising.

Who ever thought that you could make money from selling content and managing social media accounts, these jobs didn't even exist before Instagram.

If you realise this early on, I think you can end up having a really diverse and interesting creative career, knowing that something may just pop up and be perfect for you with the skills you have."

We will be publishing more profiles everyday this week to celebrate IWD and our amazing female members. Make sure you check out our website and social media each day to read their incredible stories!
